Funeral Service Trends

The needs and expectations of our families are changing and we've responded with funeral service options tailored to these new expectations.

Two generations ago, traditional funerals (visitation, funeral service and service at the cemetery) were common. It was what everyone expected.

But, as the demand for cremation services increased, there has been a shift in the types of services available. Many more families are choosing cremation and holding a memorial service afterwards. Family members and friends still come together to pay their respects to the deceased and find emotional support, but they do so in less formal ways.

Today, another funeral service option, the celebration-of-life service, has become quite popular because there are no limits to the how, where, and when the life of a loved one can be celebrated.

We have listed some of the most popular funeral trends within the industry, that appear to be increasingly more common.

Crowdfunding

Chances are, if you logged into Facebook right now, you’ll likely find a crowdfunding campaign of some sort being shared by one of your friends. In recent years, crowdfunding has grown in popularity and the funeral industry is no exception. Funeral crowdfunding is one of the fastest growing funeral trends today. Families are now using it to help cover funeral expenses, establish memorial scholarships, and so much more.

Green Burials

Today’s families are more environmentally conscious than in years past and thus more interested in green funeral trends. Green burials or natural burials are eco-friendly ways to care for the deceased. A green burial occurs by burying the deceased in a metal-free wooden casket or decomposable shroud. Not only is this method of internment better for the environment than a traditional funeral, it is often a more affordable option as well.

The Rise of Cremation

By the year 2030, experts are forecasting that 70% of funeral services in the US will be cremations. In the past ten years, this funeral trend has grown exponentially with more than 50% of families now selecting it. The rationale behind this is that families are no longer interested in somber funeral services and instead looking to hold celebrations of life.

More Personalized Services

Building off the previous funeral trends, the need for more personalized services is on the rise as well. As mentioned previously, families no longer want emotional services filled with sadness and grief. Instead, they are looking to personalize services to represent what the deceased loved. This has led to a rise in celebrant services with families now looking to honor their loved ones with parties celebrating a life well lived.
